![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On April 13, 2006, at approximately 3:30 pm, Laraine was struck & killed by a motor vehicle while riding her bicycle on a Cross Country Trip from San Diego California to St. Augustine Florida with a tour group. The accident occurred in Cleveland Texas. Laraine was obeying all the rules of the road, she did nothing wrong. Laraine, who was riding alone, missed the turn into the access road to the hotel at the end of the ride that day. The hotel was set far back from the main road. The turn was not marked by the tour group. Laraine cycled down the main road & pulled into a self service gas station to get directions. She then crossed the street & was riding back toward the hotel with traffic when she was struck & killed. Laraine was killed by a 52 year old man who was a vehicle porter for a car dealership. He was driving a SUV, he was not paying attention to the road or anything through his windshield. He was completely negligent. The vehicle hit Laraine from behind & its tires ran over her. The driver continued to drive & only stopped because he had thought that he had heard a noise. Medical personnel say Laraine was killed instantly. All of Laraine’s family & longtime friends will always remember Laraine as the very strong, courageous, kind, giving, loving human being she was. Laraine will always be in our hearts & souls. We will never forget her. On the evening of April 13th, 2006, I was having a late dinner at home. I was all alone, except for the company of Zoe, our beloved Portuguese Water Dog. I was sitting at the dining room table thinking about the day. I had not been feeling well all day. I was supposed to go over my cousin's house to help them celebrate Passover but I did not go. All of the sudden I heard a loud banging at the back door. The banging would not stop. I didn't understand why someone would not use the door bell. I later learned that the door bell at that moment stopped working. It was as if Laraine did not want me to be told that the unthinkable had occurred, she did not want my nightmare to begin. I went to the door & opened it. Standing outside were two Glastonbury cops. They asked if I was Ed & said that they needed to come in. I let them in and as they were walking in they told me that there had been an accident and Laraine had been killed. At that moment I remember the room spinning around and a deafening constant noise in my head that would not stop. I kept repeating 'Oh My God ' & I could not stand still. It all seems so surreal. How could my Soulmate of 14 years suddenly be gone? Author Joan Didion wrote: "Life changes fast. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends."
